Water is a commodity that we often take advantage of. Unfortunately water is sometimes scarce and in these times we need to know what to do to save water. Below are a few tips for saving water when there is no rain – of course, you can use these tips in rainy seasons as well.
1. Washing dishes
When using the dishwasher, to save water, make sure that it is full before turning it on. If you are using the sink instead, you can save water by filling one with washing water and the other with rinsing water, instead of constantly running water.
2. Shower time
Cut your shower time in half. It may seem difficult to cut your shower from 10 minutes to 5, but the amount of water you save is worth it.
3. Bathroom tendencies
Stop leaving the tap on when you’re brushing your teeth. You will save a lot of water by turning the tap off in between wetting and rinsing your toothbrush.
4. Mulch
Place mulch around the trees and shrubs in your garden to save water. The mulch stops the soil from absorbing the water too quickly which will decrease the frequency of watering plants.
5. Sprinkler schedule
Make sure to set your sprinkler system to come on early in the morning or late in the evening. The cool temperatures at these times will save you from using too much water.
6. Grey water
Rather than letting old bath or sink water run down the drain, use it to flush the toilet, wash your car or water the garden.
